Many in the US will think nothing of that amount of snow and icicles but for us Brits it was a real big deal and that long-lasting winter blast caused huge problems.

I'm at the coast, but when we drove inland for a few miles we were astonished at the buried cars.

lol, quite true! That's a fairly standard amount of snow for those of us in the northeastern United States; during real snowstorms, we get significantly more snow than that.

Here's a picture of my front walk and the sidewalk (covered with snow) and my car after some snow, in February 2021 (the only reason the back of the car is relatively clear is because the wind blew it away, but the drift in front of the car made up for it, lol!):

Still, for those who didn't grow up with it and aren't used to it, I'm sure it is/was quite difficult!

I see those photos are from 2010 -- how is it now?

The end of 2010 was a bad time with winds blowing across from eastern Europe bringing snow upon snow for hours on end, day-after-day.

It's not generally as bad as that in regular winters but the south east of our tiny country has just been hit by snow this past 24 hours, the very area that was still in a severe drought only weeks ago. It's the old tale that we don't often get extremes so we're not prepared for them, just as in states in the usually less-cold parts of the US when Arctic fronts and snow sweep down into the south for a few days.

Those states where winters are routinely severe have to be - and are - prepared for extreme weather every year.

Sorry to hear that. You're right about the southern U.S. in the snow -- even 3 inches or so of snow can shut down southern states, as they aren't used to it and don't have the infrastructure in place to deal with it (snowplows, salt trucks, generators, etc.).

There was a lot of precipitation here yesterday, but in my area it was just rain, though further north they did get some snow.
