Wow poetic blue, I really feel I'm learning more. I didn't think that before about the waking up within a dream and feeling paralysed. I really do think now from what you've said, that I am having an OBE, and trying to re enter my body, which does'nt work straight away, which is why I am aware, and also paralysed.
I will try that tip in future, and just relax if it happens again.
Also thanks for telling us about the unknown random objects that appear in a room. It makes sense the way you explained it.
I'll always remember one strange dream I had. I was in a house that I had never seen in my life. I became lucid, and was picking up objects and examining them. There were so many objects in detail. I remember seeing a full ashtray on a bedside table, and books in the bookcase in the living room. I even knew that the name of the road was Sevenoaks road. Don't know what this dream was about.
One tip I've got is how to stop a nightmare, or turn a bad dream around. I will imagine a swimming pool and dive into it to get away from whatever. Or I say the lords prayer in my dream. These always work for me
Ps. Another thing I do in my dreams if lucid, and if I want to check if I am within a dream is turn light switches on, they never normally work in dreams. Other things that don't work either are difficulty remembering telephone numbers, telephones etc. Any idea poetic blue why these don't work?

Billy -- the experience of feeling paralyzed when waking from a dream is not that unusual.
Normally, during REM sleep, your brain shuts off most of the muscles in your body, presumably so we don't physically act out what's happening in the dream. Like any physical function, this doesn't always work perfectly. Some people do occasionally act out their dreams, which can be dangerous to them or to their sleep partners. What you experience is sort of the opposite of that -- the paralysis continues briefly even though you may have awakened from sleep. If you Google "sleep paralysis" you will find more information about this phenomenon.
None of this contradicts poeticblue's explanations -- I don't think the scientific understanding and the spiritual understanding are in conflict. But I thought it might make this sensation less upsetting if you know that it's a fairly common and minor physical malfunction.
I have often experienced, while dreaming, a sensation that I want to run but am only able to move in slow motion. Once I dreamed I was trying to hurry down a street but it was covered about a foot deep in pumpkin pie filling. I suspect this is another version of my brain trying to make sense of the fact that muscles aren't responding to the brain's signals in the way they would when I'm awake.
Thanks. I was going to say that there will always be a scientific explanation for everything. I choose the spiritual route because it makes more sense to me. All this talk about REM and brain chemicals from other researches does not ring true to me. Maybe its both spiritual and scientific. I wont dispute that.![]()
Hi billy! Telephone and light switches may not work when you realize you are dreaming or remotley start doubting if you are dreaming or not. Why? Because they are earthy, physical things. When you are in the dream world it is purley astral. Your brain will not "will" these objects to work once you remotley start to doubt if its real. They can still work. But you have to tell them to work. But if you are looking at your dream objectively in a "prove it to me" way.. well then when the lights dont work and the phones dont work, there is your proof that you are dreaming.![]()
Thanks poeticblue. That explains well why they don't work, in that it is because they are earthy, physical things.
I usually test them in my dreams to prove to myself that I am dreaming. If they don't work, I know that I am dreaming.
Next time, I will try willing them to work, to see what happens.
